This British engraving from the mid-1800s depicts the renowned English sportsman Thomas Assheton Smith—often referred to as T.A. Smith, Esq. or Thomas Assheton Smith II to distinguish him from his father. It features an authentic stamp by master engraver D. George Thompson (visible in the detail photo). The commemorative print is also signed by Smith at the bottom right of the paper. Notice the rich shading of areas of the print, such as the coat of the muscular horse and Smith’s hunting attire. This indicates a mixed-method engraving, where an intaglio technique is combined with mezzotint. It was a common practice by British engravers and was referred to as “the English manner”. The process allows for much crisper details when compared to other printmaking techniques. Also visible in the image are four of his hounds, part of Smith’s Tedworth Hunt, which is still active in Wiltshire, England, today. The paper is presented in a thin black frame with glass, both of which have been added more recently.
Thomas Assheton Smith (born in London in 1776) was an outstanding cricketer, often participating in the Gentlemen v Players matches as a member of the amateur status Gentlemen. Smith was also dedicated to foxhunting, becoming Master of the Quorn Hunt, one of the world’s oldest hunting packs. Yet another endeavor of Smith’s was yachting, where he contributed to the design of an efficient hull for steam yachts, the first of their kind.
