The tecta d51 fagus armchair by walter gropius is an exceptional classic of early modernism and a furniture design with a direct connection to the architectural history of the bauhaus. Gropius originally designed the chair in 1922/23 for the vestibule and reception area of the famous fagus factory in alfeld. The clear, rigorously constructive design of the d51 incorporates essential principles of the fagus factory's architecture: reduced lines, an openly visible construction, and the dynamic interplay of supporting and cantilevered elements.
the striking, wide armrests, which curve elegantly inwards at the backrest, are particularly characteristic. Together with the four straight legs and the seemingly separate backrest, they create an almost architectural, sculptural form. The d51 exemplifies the design philosophy of walter gropius, the founder of the bauhaus, who sought to unite architecture, craftsmanship, and industrial production into a holistic modern design.
the version produced today by tecta preserves the distinctive character of the historical design. The example offered here features a black-painted wooden frame in excellent condition. The black leather seat and back cushions are also very well preserved, showing only a light, authentic patina that underscores the chair's high-quality vintage character. Tecta began production of this chair in the early 1970s; this particular chair likely dates from the 1990s.
