This 19th century oak barrel has been repurposed as a table. Has a heavy, smoked glass top with beveled corners which is removable. The barrel has been stained and varnished. Reads WHALE OIL, Nantucket Whaling Company. The barrel itself has all the signs of an original from the late 1800s. Has rough hand-hewn wood, flat, riveted steel bands with square and round head nails. Tool marks on the wood staves (slats). Plank separation and patina, water stains, rusted and pitted bands. There are also borer beetle holes common on century old wood. In excellent condition for a utilitarian piece. Has period wear and patina consistent with age and use. One band is slightly loose. There is no serious damage or repairs.
