The Sukuma people, the largest ethnic group in Tanzania, inhabit the northwestern region between Lake Victoria and Lake Rukwa. Mwanza, a significant town along Lake Victoria, serves as a cultural hub for the Sukuma community. Sukumaland, characterized by dry savannah and semi-desert landscapes with a subtropical climate, is home to rich cultural traditions. The Sukuma people share cultural affinities with the neighboring Nyamwezi community, evident in their shared customs and traditions.
Despite Tanzania's urbanization trends, around 80% of the Sukuma population continues to reside in rural areas, maintaining a deep connection to their ancestral lands through traditional practices. While urban migration is on the rise, the Sukuma people play a significant role in preserving Tanzania's cultural diversity, navigating the delicate balance between their enduring traditions and the evolving dynamics of modern urban life.
