Designed for both function and portability, the container would have been used to store and carry powdered tobacco, an important part of daily life and social exchange among the Turkana people.
The smooth, curved form of the horn is complemented by a carved wooden stopper, often shaped for a secure fit and ease of use. Natural variations in the horn create subtle tonal shifts, giving each piece a unique character, while the wood adds warmth and contrast. Over time, handling and use have developed a rich patina, enhancing its visual appeal and authenticity.
Compact yet sculptural, this snuff container reflects the resourcefulness of Turkana artisans, who utilized available natural materials to create durable, functional objects with understated beauty.

From the collection of Margie and Phil Matter. Margie lived in South Africa, and later she and her husband Phil opened a gallery in Tucson. Everything in this collection was in their home for more than thirty years. Africa Direct recently bought the collection; at 95, Margie wants to share the things she has loved so much.
