The Fang people, who migrated to their present-day region during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, settled across southern Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon. As one of the largest ethnic groups in Central Africa, the Fang placed significant importance on family lineage and ancestor worship. The practice of ancestor veneration was conducted at family shrines, where byeri—reliquary boxes containing the bones of the deceased—were carefully maintained. These sacred sites were overseen by the Esa, an elder responsible for safeguarding the ancestral remains. The eyema-o-byeri figures, sculpted with great care, were positioned on or near these containers to serve as spiritual guardians of the ancestors.
The distinctive design of the Fang figures reflects their ritualistic function. Typically crouched, with bent legs poised to rest on the container, these figures were placed on the edge of the byeri, their legs hanging over the side in a protective stance. While these figures were not always visible, as they were often concealed when not in use, they played a vital role in the initiation rites of young men, validating their passage into adulthood and affirming their connection to the ancestral lineage. Through their graceful and purposeful forms, the eyema-o-byeri figures represent both the reverence for the past and the ongoing presence of ancestors in the lives of the Fang people.
