In this matrilineal society, the birth of girl babies is especially valued. The tradition of the akuaba originates from the story of Akua, a childless woman who sought guidance from a shrine priest. She was instructed to have a small figure carved and care for it as if it were a real child. In time, she gave birth to a daughter, astonishing those around her, who exclaimed, “Akua, wo ba ni” (Akua, this is your child).
In this case, the figures are presented as a female pair, reinforcing ideals of fertility, continuity, and the importance of daughters within Akan culture. Barren women may carry or care for such carved akuaba figures to encourage conception, later keeping them as companions or placing them in shrines after childbirth as offerings and reminders of spiritual intervention.

When used in shrines, these figures are often adorned with white clay to communicate with the spirit world. In domestic settings, they are carefully dressed, accessorized, and styled with carved hairstyles. Some may feature facial scarification, not for decoration but as a protective measure to deter spirits from reclaiming them. In cases where families have experienced the loss of children, markings may be added to the figures to mislead spirits believed to seek out beautiful children, helping prevent their return to the spirit world.
