Known for their extraordinary textile traditions, Kuba artists created these intricate panels from hand-cut and embroidered raffia fiber, producing some of the most sophisticated abstract designs in African art.

Shoowa (also spelled Bushoong) squares are distinguished by densely worked geometric compositions interlocking lines, chevrons, grids, and labyrinthine motifs meticulously built up through embroidery and appliqué over a raffia cloth base. The subtle variation in stitch direction, pile height, and natural fiber tone creates a richly textured surface with remarkable visual depth.

Traditionally, these textiles were worn as prestige garments, wrapped around the body during court ceremonies and important social occasions. They also functioned as indicators of status and artistic achievement within Kuba society. Each square is unique, reflecting both individual creativity and established design vocabulary passed down through generations.
Today, Kuba Shoowa squares are highly regarded for their bold abstraction and modern aesthetic sensibility, making them compelling examples of Central African textile artistry and cultural heritage.

We do not recommend laundering textiles and do not accept returns of textiles that have been laundered in any manner. Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing (NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears.
