Maker/Artist Attribution: Attributed to the prominent New York cabinetmaker Alexander Roux (1813–1886).
An exceptional mid-to-late 19th-century American Rococo Revival parlor center table of rare elegance and slender proportions. The top features a highly desirable, deeply serpentine "turtle-top" profile, heavily veneered in book-matched burl walnut (or rosewood) showcasing a brilliant, mirrored grain sequence. The centerpiece is framed by a contrasting multi-toned marquetry inlaid border.The exceptionally shallow and graceful apron boasts a continuous band of relief-carved and pierced C-scrolls, foliage, and stylized floral clusters. The table is elevated on four dramatic, deeply swept cabriole legs featuring heavily carved acanthus leaf knees, terminating in elegant French scrolled feet. The legs are structurally joined by a magnificent, double-curved X-form stretcher accented with C-scrolls, meeting at an ornate, openwork central finial block.
