Antique Pennsylvania Butterfly & Birdcage Back Windsor Armchair, Circa 1810-1820
A handsome Pennsylvania Windsor armchair with a distinctive butterfly and birdcage back, likely made in Lancaster, Lebanon, or Berks County, circa 1810-1820. The chair features bamboo-turned legs, spindles, and arm supports throughout, with a shaped ovoid poplar seat. The legs are through-mortised into the seat and secured with wedges — genuine period Windsor construction. Maple and oak turnings complete the frame.
The chair was refinished approximately 60-70 years ago and retains remnants of the original green paint beneath the seat, offering a glimpse of its original decorated surface. Aside from the older refinishing, the chair is in original condition with no restorations or repairs — a solid, sturdy example that remains genuinely comfortable to sit in today.
