A handsome and substantial example of fine Edwardian English deskware, this impressive antique inkwell was produced in 1901 by Mappin & Webb. Combining brilliant cut crystal with sterling silver, it offers the refined quality and timeless elegance for which the celebrated English maker is known.
The generously proportioned body is crafted from thick, solid crystal, beautifully cut in a striking diamond-pattern hobnail design. The deeply faceted surface catches and refracts the light beautifully, creating flashes of brilliance from every angle. Its substantial weight gives the piece the presence of a fine desk sculpture or decorative paperweight, making it especially appealing for a traditional library, study, or gentleman’s desk.
Measures approximately 4 inches high, 3.75 inches wide, and 3.75 inches deep. Weighs approximately 2 pounds. The inkwell is finished with an elegant domed sterling silver lid, fully hallmarked for 1901, with the maker’s mark for Mappin & Webb. The smooth, rounded silver contrasts beautifully with the crisp geometry of the cut crystal, giving the piece a wonderfully balanced and sophisticated presentation. Good antique condition, there are several indents to the silver lid. There a few small chips to the body and surface wear scratches to base. Please review the photos for further condition assessment,
A superb decorative object even when not used for its original purpose, this impressive inkwell would make a striking addition to an English country interior, traditional office, library, or collection of antique writing accessories. Its substantial scale, brilliant crystal, and prestigious maker make it a particularly eye-catching example of early 20th-century English craftsmanship.
