This vintage studio pottery vessel by Joseph Hysong (1925–2008) was hand-thrown in California during the mid-twentieth century. Crafted in stoneware, it features a natural iron-rich clay body with an expressive ribbed and faceted exterior, a flowing dark glazed interior, and a sculptural pierced lug incorporated into the vessel wall. The base bears the artist's incised monogram, identifying the work as an authentic example of Hysong's studio pottery.
Joseph Hysong studied ceramics at San Jose State College before teaching at the University of Hawaii during the 1950s and 1960s alongside influential ceramic artists including Claude Horan and Toshiko Takaezu. His work reflects the influence of post-war American studio ceramics and Japanese Mingei traditions, emphasizing natural materials, expressive throwing, and restrained organic form. The combination of exposed stoneware, subtle throwing rings, and contrasting interior glaze demonstrates the thoughtful balance between functional craftsmanship and sculptural design.
This vessel comes from a Santa Cruz Mountains collection specialising in California and Hawaiian studio ceramics. Signed examples by Joseph Hysong are increasingly appreciated by collectors of American studio pottery and represent an important period in the development of West Coast ceramic art.
