This antique charcoal iron with its authentic patina (also known as a coal iron or box iron) was used to iron clothes and bedding at the turn of the century. This specific "box" design with a hinged lid became widespread in Europe during the 17th century. Box-style irons were hollow and meant to be filled with hot coals or embers to provide internal heat. Models featuring the rooster latch are typically of European origin. The brass bird is a functional latch used to secure the lid while the arched cutouts along the sides allowed air to circulate, keeping the coals inside smoldering. The wooden handle protected the user's hand from the intense heat of the cast iron body. No makers mark found. This unique piece of history makes a striking decorative accent perfect for farmhouse, rustic, industrial, or vintage interiors.
