Title: 鶉 … Read more Fine Japanese painted 4-panel byobu (folding screen) "Chrysanthemums and Quail" by Setsuga. Signed and sealed by the artist. Title: 鶉 (Rinpa Kohaku). Rinpa is a free-style school of artists that originated in Kyoto, founded by Ogata Korin. While the Kano School was sponsored by the government, Rinpa artists worked independently. Gouache, watercolor and ink on gold-leaf style foil plates over paper. Silk brocade border. Lacquered brown wood frame with beautifully engraved copper corners, plaques and medallions, showing some age patina. Paper and original label on back. Comes in a carboard storage case. New eight black metal hooks for easy installation are included. This screen was made by Iohara Screen Studio in Kyoto, Japan, in the 1980s, Showa Era. Excellent condition - no damage to the painting nor back, minimal age wear overall, strong hinges, clean, sturdy. This byobu was kept for decades in Kyoto Art Center for preserving design patterns.
