Fine 4-panel painted byobu (folding screen) "Nanakusa" (Seven Autumn Flowers) by Japanese artist Essen. It depicts the traditional Seven Autumn Flowers of Japan, including bellflowers, bush clover, golden lace, pinks, and other seasonal flowers. Signed and sealed by the artist. Gouache, watercolor and ink on gold-leaf style paper. Silk brocade border. Lacquered brown wood frame with beautifully engraved copper corners, plaques and medallions, showing some age patina. Paper on back. Comes in a carboard storage case. Eight new black metal hooks for easy installation are included. This screen was made by Iohara Screen Studio in Kyoto, Japan, in the 1980s, Showa Era. Very Good condition - no damage to the painting nor back, minimal age wear overall, minor repairs at the edges of the 2nd and 3rd panels not visible when the screen is fully unfolded, strong hinges, clean, sturdy. This byobu was kept for decades in Kyoto Art Center for preserving design patterns.
