Blue and gold, printed with real metallic gold that genuinely gleams: a 19th-century chromolithograph of three exquisite royal-blue Sèvres porcelain … Read more Blue and gold, printed with real metallic gold that genuinely gleams: a 19th-century chromolithograph of three exquisite royal-blue Sèvres porcelain vases, each a different silhouette and each dripping with gilded ornament — spiralling ribbons, sculpted mermaid handles, a delicate dotted "partridge-eye" ground. The plate comes from Édouard Garnier's celebrated 1892 survey of Sèvres soft-paste porcelain; Garnier was curator of the Sèvres museum, and every plate was drawn by hand and printed in Paris with the gold laid on separately, which is why it reads as jewellery rather than ink. Two of the vases pictured are treasures now in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London — you're hanging a portrait of museum pieces.

The framing matches the grandeur: headed "SÈVRES" with a marbled lapis-blue border, set behind a blue mount with gilt-lined French matting in an ornate acanthus-carved giltwood frame. Rich, formal, and thoroughly French. Beautiful over a sideboard in the dining room, in a paneled study, or grouped with its companion plates for real impact — anywhere gilt and blue-and-white already have a home.
