Traveling Man Treasures has discovered this extremely rare Osun shrine jar from the Yoruba people in Nigeria, specifically the Osogbo … Read more Traveling Man Treasures has discovered this extremely rare Osun shrine jar from the Yoruba people in Nigeria, specifically the Osogbo region, and is believed to have been crafted in the early to mid-20th century. The jar has damage to the upper rim, but is in excellent condition otherwise. The piece was deemed authentic by Arthur Erickson, owner and curator of Arthur Erickson Inc., Old Native Arts & Unusual Antiquities, located in Portland, Oregon. He was uncertain; however, whether this was a ceremonial or home use jar. A few similar jars can be researched and/or found in museums.

Osun is a revered deity in Yoruba culture, associated with fertility, healing, and protection. The jars are not just containers but also symbols of indigenous spirituality and cultural identity. These jars are made for shrines dedicated to the goddess Osun, the Mother of Life-Giving Waters, and are often used to hold river stones and water.

The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a place of worship and pilgrimage, with many shrines and artworks dedicated to Osun. The river itself is considered sacred, believed to have healing properties.
