An Exceptionally Fine Quality French Napoleon III FRENCH NAPOLEON III Ebony Officers Campaign Style Traveling Writing Slope of outstanding quality and unusually large size.
Made by Alphonse Tahan of 30 Rue de la Paix, Paris who was the official master cabinet maker for the French Emperor Napoleon III and his wife the Empress Eugenie
The hinged lid opening to reveal a fitted interior complete with its original plush bottle green velvet which is a little worn but too nice to replace. Interior features its original fitted letters section and a single ink bottle. The rectangular top lid with two highly ornate boulle work inlay detailing. The baise underneath has been replaced which is nicely done.
This offering is a truly stunning piece.
Condition: Professionally restored retaining its wonderful rich dark colour, Box closes firmly with no gaps. Lock and key are present and arev working, nice original firm hinges.

Alphonse Tahan (1830-1880) was the official master cabinet maker for the French Emperor Napoleon III and his wife the Empress Eugenie. As the leading trend-setter of the day, the Empress was regarded as having impeccable taste and favoured Tahan’s workshop so greatly increasing his reputation.
The firm was based in Paris and won medals at both the The Great Exhibition in London in 1851 and at the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris. He also produced other fine quality items such as fine bronze jewellery caskets and superior quality wooden boxes.
The business was carried on by his son Jean Pierre Alexandre Tahan after his father died.
