A striking example of late Victorian English deskware, this substantial antique inkwell combines beautifully cut solid crystal with the refinement of sterling silver. Made in London in 1889 for the Army & Navy Cooperative Society by silversmith Frederick Bradford Macrea, the piece is fully hallmarked and has an impressive presence befitting a distinguished Victorian writing desk.
The heavy crystal body is boldly formed with a sweeping spiral or swirl design that catches and refracts the light beautifully. Viewed from below, the base reveals an elegant starburst cut, adding another layer of traditional craftsmanship and visual interest. The inkwell is crowned by a smooth, generously proportioned domed sterling silver lid, creating a handsome contrast between brilliant crystal and polished silver.
Exceptionally substantial for its size, the inkwell weighs an impressive 2 pounds 8 ounces and measures approximately 3.25 inches wide, 3.25 inches deep, and 4 inches high. Its weight, scale, and sculptural form give it a commanding presentation, making it equally appealing as a functional desk accessory, collector’s object, or decorative accent in an English country house, traditional library, or gentleman’s study. The piece remains in good antique condition with age-related wear. There are two indents to the sterling silver lid, as well as an abrasion line extending around the circumference of the crystal toward the lower portion of the body. There are few small chips to the body. The base also shows a scratches and wear consistent with more than 135 years of age and use. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
A wonderful piece of Victorian luxury, this handsome inkwell offers an appealing combination of impressive weight, richly cut crystal, English sterling silver, and precisely dated London hallmarks. Its bold spiral form and elegant proportions make it a particularly eye-catching addition to any collection of antique writing accessories, English silver, or fine desk objects.
