A beautifully carved French Louis XV-style giltwood settee featuring a graceful serpentine silhouette, floral and foliate carvings, cabriole legs, and a pierced crest. Dating to the mid-20th century, the warm gilt finish has mellowed attractively with age, highlighting the depth of the carving. The settee retains its period burgundy damask upholstery with an elegant neoclassical urn-and-laurel motif.
Generously scaled and exceptionally sturdy, it is equally at home in a living room, library, entry, or bedroom. Its sculptural carving, classic French styling, and comfortable proportions complement traditional, European-inspired, and transitional interiors.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
What stands out to me is the quality of the carving. The flowing crest, the deeply carved apron, and the beautifully shaped arms give this settee much more personality than many Louis XV revival pieces from the same period. I also appreciate that the original upholstery has survived. While a future owner could certainly recover it to suit another interior, I think the burgundy damask gives the piece warmth and reinforces its classic French character.
