Don Albinson fue un diseñador industrial estadounidense formado en la Cranbrook Academy of Art. Trabajó durante trece años con Charles y Ray Eames y en 1964 fue contratado por Knoll como director de Desarrollo y Diseño. Allí ayudó a llevar a producción diseños complejos de otros autores y creó su obra más conocida: la silla apilable Knoll 1601. Presentada en 1965 fue diseñada para espacios colectivos como auditorios y universidades, cuenta con estructura de aluminio y asiento y respaldo de plástico moldeado. Su principal característica es la posibilidad de apilar varias unidades para facilitar el almacenamiento y transporte, manteniendo comodidad, resistencia y una estética moderna y funcional.
