A striking vintage gilt composition bust titled "Lys" (The Lily)," after the celebrated French sculptor Emile Pinedo (1840-1916). This decorative sculpture faithfully reproduces one of Pinedo's most beloved Art Nouveau female figures and retains both the incised "Pinedo" signature on the reverse and the "Lys" inscription on the front cartouche.
While the original late nineteenth-century works by Pinedo were typically executed in bronze or spelter, this example appears to be a later composition or chalkware interpretation, likely dating to the mid-twentieth century. The exact maker is unknown.
Composition/chalkware bust with a gilt-painted finish. Exact manufacturing materials and finish composition are unknown.
The bust presents beautifully with its warm gilded finish and wonderfully expressive facial features. The elegant turn of the head, softly modeled hair, and ornate pedestal base make this an eye-catching decorative sculpture suitable for traditional, French, Art Nouveau, Hollywood Regency, and eclectic interiors.
At nearly eighteen inches tall, this is a substantial display piece that works equally well on a pedestal, console, bookcase, or mantel.
