The horse’s flat profile is cutout from sheet iron or heavy sheet zinc. The animal stands atop a classic directional arrow featuring a triangular pointer tip and a fletched feather tail. The hooves are riveted into integrated metal tabs that clamp directly onto the main horizontal arrow shaft. The central mounting sleeve, the vertical tube in the middle, is designed to slide over a lightning rod or a rooftop spire spindle.
While many premium Victorian-era vanes were crafted three-dimensionally in molded copper, flat profile silhouette vanes like this one were highly popular in rural America. They provided an affordable, durable and highly visible indicator of wind direction for farmers.
This horse is modeled in a standing or proud walking stance rather than a full gallop. The build is reminiscent of a standardbred, trotter or farm horse. It captures a clean, minimalist aesthetic highly sought after by collectors of primitive country antiques.
