A striking and monumental Scandinavian art glass centerpiece designed by acclaimed Swedish designer Gunnar Cyrén for Orrefors, executed in 1993.
Hand-blown in richly cased cobalt blue art glass, this exceptional handkerchief-form bowl exemplifies Cyrén's sophisticated exploration of movement, color, and light. Its sculptural silhouette rises into an elegant undulating rim, while the body is animated by pale blue optical dot inclusions and vertical optic ribbing that create remarkable depth and shifting visual effects from every angle.
The dramatic interplay between the deep cobalt body, luminous interior patterning, and heavy crystal walls transforms the piece throughout the day as light passes through the glass, making it as compelling viewed from above as it is in profile.
Gunnar Cyrén (1931–2013) ranks among Sweden's most influential twentieth-century designers. Joining Orrefors in 1959, he became the company's head of design a decade later and created the celebrated Nobel stemware commissioned for the Nobel Banquet, still used annually at Stockholm City Hall. Throughout his distinguished career, Cyrén was recognized internationally for his innovative use of color, form, and optical effects, producing some of the most enduring designs in modern Scandinavian glass.
At an impressive 13 inches in diameter and over 10 inches tall, this is a particularly substantial example that functions equally well as a dramatic centerpiece, architectural decorative object, or standalone work of Scandinavian art glass. The underside retains its original Orrefors foil label and is engraved with the designer's signature, model number, and production date.
