Arrow weathervanes are among the oldest and most classic designs in American weathervane history, prized for their clean, graphic silhouettes. The barbed arrowhead tip is made of cast brass. Foundries used heavy cast metal at the tip to act as a crucial counterweight, ensuring the arrow balanced perfectly on its pivot point.
The feathered tail, or “fletching” is constructed from molded sheet copper with a corrugated center ridge to catch the wind. The edges feature a classic serrated decorative border.
The surface shows an authentic, beautifully aged patina. Traces of an original golden or yellow-brass tone peek through the center rod. This specific style of arrow weathervane—with a heavy cast barbed point and a serrated sheet-copper tail—was highly popular in the late 19th century to early 20th century (circa 1880–1930).
The iron rod and gray rectangular base block are modern gallery additions. Collectors and interior designers frequently salvage old weathervanes from damaged barns, cupolas or steeples and mount them this way so they can be displayed indoors as sculptural folk art.
