Beautiful 19th century Chinese carved hardwood hall chair featuring a marble inset seat, twin marble inset back panels, mother-of-pearl inlay, pierced carved apron, and intricate openwork back.
This striking antique Chinese chair has a dark hongmu-type hardwood frame with graceful rounded rails, scrolling arms, geometric carving, floral and foliate details, and decorative mother-of-pearl inlay throughout the crest rail, back, and front apron. The marble seat and back panels add natural movement and contrast, with warm veining and pale stone tones that give the piece a highly collected, sculptural presence.
Auction-attributed as Late Qing Dynasty, this chair is consistent with 19th century Chinese carved hardwood furniture made for formal interiors, reception spaces, scholar rooms, and decorative hall seating. It works beautifully as a statement accent chair in an entryway, study, bedroom, living room, gallery wall, retail display, design project, or layered antique interior.
This is best understood as a decorative antique hall chair, scholar chair, or occasional accent chair rather than a modern daily-use dining chair. It has strong presence, beautiful age, and visible antique character, including some condition issues noted below.
A wonderful piece for collectors of Chinese antique furniture, Qing Dynasty furniture, Asian antiques, Chinoiserie interiors, carved rosewood-style furniture, marble inset furniture, and mother-of-pearl inlaid decorative objects.
