An original 1901 Jugend magazine cover (No. 51) featuring a striking portrait by renowned German painter and illustrator Walter Thor (1870–1929). Published by G. Hirth's Verlag in Munich, Jugend was the influential magazine that gave its name to the Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) movement.
Thor's elegant portrait of a fashionable young woman in a dramatic black hat exemplifies the refined, painterly style that helped define early twentieth-century German illustration. Today, Walter Thor's original paintings, posters, and graphic works are widely collected and represented in museum and auction records. This authentic antique cover is an exceptional example of Belle Époque graphic design and European Art Nouveau publishing.
