An exceptional pair of late 19th-century forged iron specialty pliers that beautifully exemplify the craftsmanship and functional design of the Victorian industrial era. Compact yet substantial, these professionally manufactured pliers feature a fixed riveted pivot, elegantly tapered forged handles, and distinctive jaws with checkered gripping pads, coarse serrated gripping teeth, and a relief opening behind the jaws that allows the tool to accommodate larger workpieces.
A faint multi-line manufacturer's stamp is present on one handle. The lowest line appears to read "NEW YORK," indicating American manufacture, while the remaining lines are too worn to identify the maker with certainty. The professionally forged construction and surviving factory stamp suggest manufacture by a specialized American tool company during the late nineteenth century.
I acquired these pliers at a Rhode Island yard sale in the 1970s and have owned them for more than fifty years. They have never been restored or altered and retain their original forged surface with a rich, naturally developed patina and honest wear consistent with generations of use. The original riveted pivot still operates with remarkably smooth, free movement, and the jaws align properly when closed, reflecting the quality of their original manufacture.
Today they display equally well as an authentic antique hand tool or as a sculptural industrial object. Their elegant proportions, unusual jaw configuration, and rich aged surface make them an excellent addition to an industrial, farmhouse, or traditional interior, as well as to a collection of early American tools.
