In the early quarter of the 20th century, the modern coffee table emerged. As upholstered sofas and lower seating became popular, furniture makers began producing shorter tables designed to sit in front of a couch. Many historians credit this period with the rise of the coffee table as a distinct piece of furniture.
It wasn’t until the 1920s that coffee tables became a standard feature of living rooms. They were used not just for serving coffee but also for books, magazines, decorative objects, and entertaining guests.
The low height of this piece suggests its original function was not a table, but a plant stand.
The early 20th-century fern trend was the tail-end of "Pteridomania" (Fern Madness). Spanning roughly from the 1840s to the 1910s, this obsession was rooted in Victorian society's embrace of natural history, which popularized ferns in both botany and home decor.
Constructed in quarter sawn oak. The radial cutting method reveals gorgeous medullary rays that give it a distinct, almost iridescent look. Because the growth rings are perpendicular to the face of the board, quarter sawn wood is highly resistant to warping, twisting, and cupping.
Four mascarons (ornamental faces or grotesque heads) are carved into each leg. Originally used in antiquity to frighten away evil spirits, they evolved into pure architectural decoration during the Renaissance, Beaux-Arts, and Art Nouveau periods.
It's uncertain if the Daisy steel plate casters are original to the design, or an add-on. The hardware is antique and integrates well with the structure, creating a rare configuration of form and function.
Finished in a warm honey stain. Highly desired patina.
This caster table is from a transitional period that looks at home in any Victorian, Art Nouveau, or Arts & Crafts interior. Simple, with just the right amount of character to spark conversation.
