On offer is an authentic historic Native American Pueblo water jar, or “olla,” with dual-loop handles and bold polychrome floral decoration dating roughly from the 1880s to the 1920s. Its painted design combines large sunflower-like blossoms with flowing split-leaf fronds accented by delicate dots or seed pods.
The layout heavily reflects stylistic elements from both the Zuni Pueblo and Acoma Pueblo traditions of western New Mexico. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, potters from these neighboring regions frequently exchanged ideas. Zuni potters were famous for stylized rainbirds and heart-line deer, while Acoma makers adapted these floral frames onto highly polished, cream-slipped backgrounds.
The late 1800s marked a period where the arrival of the railroad brought a boom in tourism. Acoma potters began adapting traditional ollas by adding non-traditional features like dual loop handles to appeal to outside buyers or make the pots easier to secure for transport.
The pot’s color has aged into a deep, mottled golden-amber hue. Significant staining, soot, and mineral discoloration are present across the body, which typically happens when a vessel is used close to cooking hearths or buried/stored over long periods. The rounded bottom’s extensive abrasion, scuffing and loss of slip confirms the pot repeatedly sat directly on rocky soil or sandy floors during its lifetime.
The dark iron/mineral pigments have faded, bled, and worn away unevenly, which is characteristic of traditional pit-fired, hand-coiled pottery subjected to decades of handling and environmental exposure.
Additionally, the way the dark mineral paint sits flush with—and has naturally eroded into—the scratched white clay bed underneath completely validates that this pot is a historic survivor, not a modern, chemically aged reproduction.
Signature/Maker’s mark: Nonexistent.
