This item is a traditional Native American Pueblo wedding vessel, specifically executed in a polychrome (multi-colored) style. The two separate spouts symbolize the bride and groom. The looping ceramic arch connecting the spouts represents the union of marriage and the creation of a shared life. During a traditional Southwest wedding ceremony, a liquid (often water or herbal tea) is filled inside. The couple drinks together—one from each spout—to toast their eternal bond.
The vessel displays aesthetic traits typified by the Acoma traditions of New Mexico. On the broad sides of the round belly, large circular frames feature stepped geometric blocks combined with floral sprays containing fine split leaves. The profile panels show bold diamond patterns colored in rich terracotta orange, deep black, and unpainted cream white slip. The bottom shifts cleanly into a solid terracotta-orange clay base, which is characteristic of regional historic and revivalist hand-coiled pottery styles.
Signature/Maker’s mark: Nonexistent.
