A 19th century replica three-panel folding screen (paravent), combining two distinct decorative arts in a single breathtaking piece: oil-painted landscape panels above, and exquisite marquetry inlay below.
The upper two-thirds of each panel is painted with a sweeping Italianate architectural landscape — crumbling Roman arches, tower houses, cypress trees, and open skies in the manner of Canaletto and Giovanni Pannini. Each panel presents a different vantage point within the same imaginary landscape, creating a continuous panoramic scene when opened. A noble dog reclines in the foreground of the rightmost panel; figures move through the middle distance. The painting quality is high — original oil work, with visible brushwork and luminous depth.
The lower third of each panel transitions to richly figured marquetry: sinuous floral scrollwork inlaid in golden fruitwood against a dark walnut ground. The frame is carved walnut — deep relief acanthus leaves and scroll motifs surround each arched panel opening. Brass hinges join the three panels. The reverse is finished in plain warm walnut veneer.
At over seven feet tall and seven feet wide when open, this screen transforms any room it enters.
