Charming and highly decorative bisque or cream earthenware covered tureen or game pie dish featuring richly molded game, grapevine swags and hunt and fruit motifs in relief. The oval buff colored form is encircled with clusters of grapes, leaves, and hanging game birds, while the domed lid is topped with a sculptural rabbit finial, evoking traditional English country house and hunting lodge décor and reflecting the Victorian fascination with country sporting scenes and abundant harvest motifs. Originally designed for serving game pies and savory dishes, this piece now makes a striking display object for a country house, hunting lodge, English pottery collection, or traditional kitchen décor.
Rendered in a warm cream-colored matte finish, this piece showcases fine molded detail and a wonderfully rustic neoclassical aesthetic. Perfect as a centerpiece on a dining table, sideboard, or kitchen display, it offers both decorative appeal and collectible functional character. A glazed ceramic liner/baking dish fits perfectly into the tureen and is removable for easy cooking or serving.
It has is a classic Wedgwood Cane Ware mark. Based on the style of the impressed stamp and the body color, the tureen was likely produced in the mid-20th century, most commonly between the 1930s and 1960s.
A few observations: The simple impressed WEDGWOOD mark without "England" is often found on utilitarian cane ware and kitchenware forms; The single letter "L" is likely a potter's, mold, or batch mark rather than a date code; The adjacent G/G mark is probably a workman's or mold identifier; The rabbit finial, hanging game birds, and grapevine decoration are characteristic of Wedgwood's sporting and game-themed cane ware pieces inspired by 18th- and 19th-century English game pie dishes.
This piece is a wonderful example of classic English Cane Ware, combining rustic sporting imagery with the refined craftsmanship that made Wedgwood one of Britain's most celebrated potteries. Add it to your collection today.
