The … Read more A handsome pair of Chinese armchairs executed in a Ming Dynasty-style Southern Official's Hat form constructed from radiant hardwood. The chairs feature continuous, gently curving lines and a minimal and restrained elegance. Each chair is constructed with a serpentine, yoke-shaped crest rail sweeping forward into rounded and scrolling open arms, each supported below by a shaped baluster column. The back of the chair is crafted with a tall single splat cut from a dramatically figured plank of hardwood with a rich burl-like grain. The chair is supported by squared legs tapering into carved hoof-like chow feet. The seat is made up of a wood panel within a box frame anchored by a shaped apron with a collared seat rail and finished with a loose seat cushion in natural linen-woven fabric. The wood retains a warm, lustrous hand-rubbed lacquer finish in honeyed amber and rosewood red tones. The chair frames are heavy and solid having excellent joinery and craftsmanship in exceptional condition as see in photos. The pair is well suited as occasional, side, or accent seating.
