Each chair features a squared back composed of dense, hand-carved openwork fretwork in an interlocking geometric and meandering Greek key fret pattern. The yoke-form crest rail curves gently outward, while the open arms repeat the fretwork motif at smaller scale, ending in solid wooden rests. The backs are accented by a central inset of burlwood above a vertically inset panel of beautifully veined red-brown marble. The Chinese marble dream-stone panels are meant to inspire scholarly thought and reflection. The chairs are constructed on straight and squared legs joined by straight box stretchers. The seats are accented by a gently scrolled apron carved in a stylized cloud motif, crisp key-fret carvings at the foot blocks, and exposed joinery. The chair frames are sturdy and solid having excellent joinery and craftsmanship. The chairs are finished with later loose seat cushions in a neutral oatmeal woven fabric. Crafted in a classic Ming Revival stye, the Chinese export chairs are well suited for use as sculptural accent chairs or dining armchairs in a variety of spaces. Sold as a pair.
