It was made in the same kind of mountain factory that Kokeshi dolls are made based on the Kanji characters and the iconic Mount Fuji stamp. The Mt. Fuji stamp denotes quality and was in use until the 1950's. The characters on the stamp are 針箱 (Haribako), which literally translates to "needle box" or "sewing box," and 組合 (Kumiai), which typically means "association" or "union," often referring to a guild of craftsmen, which is the mountain factory in Japan. The central image is a stylized Mount Fuji, a classic symbol used frequently on Japanese artisan goods and postage stamps from the early-to-mid 20th century. It is a large box with 5 drawers. It would make a gorgeous sewing box, or a box to hold beads, or buttons. It would be great as a jewelry box or to hold a collection of netusuke. It's really exquisite. I love Japanese things. See less
