This antique-style Chinese ceramic wine jar features a rich, glossy teal-green lead glaze with natural pooled areas and fine crazing throughout. Its ovoid body rests on a slightly flared base and tapers up to a wide neck, complete with a fitted, tiered lid topped by a pointed finial. Prominently featured on the front of the vessel is an unglazed, buff-colored rectangular cartouche framed by scrollwork and molded floral details. This panel displays four dark, raised Chinese characters reading “Da Die Yao Jiu” (打跌藥酒), indicating the vessel was used for a traditional medicinal wine intended to treat injuries, falls, or bruises. Just above this inscription sits a small spout intricately molded in the form of a stylized beast or dragon head. A sturdy, vertically ribbed strap handle runs down the back of the jar, balanced on the upper shoulders by delicate, sprig-molded floral and bamboo leaf motifs. With the lid removed, the jar reveals a wide, open rim well-suited for traditional filling and pouring.
