This wonderful American folk art box, an example of early 20th-century tramp art, includes a large-scale chip-carved, multi-layered technique with unique slanted side panels. The interior is wood-lined. The piece is in fantastic condition with nice symmetry; all the original pieces are in place. Unsigned
Popular from the 1870s through the 1940s, tramp art was a highly resourceful craft. Makers gathered discarded soft woods, most famously wooden cigar boxes and shipping crates, to whittle down using only a pocket knife. Because each piece was completely built by hand without standard patterns, no two tramp art boxes are exactly alike.
