An elegant Italian Rococo French Louis XVI style settee attributed to Maison Jansen, this refined piece captures the romantic sophistication and decorative excellence associated with the great European design houses of the early to mid-20th century. Gracefully proportioned and richly detailed, the settee combines Louis XVI neoclassical symmetry with Italian Rococo movement, creating a highly decorative seating form ideal for an entry hall, bedroom, dressing room, formal living room, or designer interior.
The carved frame features a beautifully shaped back with a central oval medallion, flanked by sweeping arms and delicately scrolled ends. The painted and parcel-gilt finish displays an intentionally distressed surface, revealing layers of age, wear, and patina that give the piece its old-world character. Carved details include ribbon, beadwork, rosettes, floral cresting, fluted legs, and classical ornamentation, all consistent with the French Louis XVI revival taste for elegance and refinement.
The settee is upholstered in a warm gold damask fabric decorated with bows, tassels, and neoclassical motifs. The fabric complements the cream-painted frame and subtle gilt accents beautifully, adding softness and formality without overpowering the carved structure.
Maison Jansen was one of the most prestigious decorating firms of the 20th century. Founded in Paris in 1880 by Jean-Henri Jansen, the firm became internationally known for luxurious interiors, fine furniture, and historically inspired designs for royalty, society figures, embassies, hotels, and important private residences. Maison Jansen was especially celebrated for reinterpreting French Louis XV, Louis XVI, Directoire, Empire, and neoclassical styles with elegance, quality, and theatrical sophistication.
Condition: This settee is presented in intentionally distressed, decorator-ready condition. The painted frame shows visible surface wear, rubbing, small losses, age-related chips, oxidation to gilt areas, and areas where the finish has naturally softened over time. These characteristics are part of its decorative appeal and give the piece an authentic antique look. The upholstery shows visible wear, creasing, fading, discoloration, and signs of age, especially on the seat cushion and high-contact areas. The frame appears structurally presentable from the photographs, though as with all antique and vintage seating, professional inspection is recommended prior to daily heavy use.
A rare and highly decorative seating piece, this Maison Jansen-attributed settee offers tremendous visual charm, European pedigree, and timeless designer appeal. It is ideal for collectors, decorators, and homeowners seeking a statement piece with history, romance, and unmistakable French-inspired elegan
