An exceptional early 20th-century English headboard in the Edwardian style. Made of wood with marquetry. Its structure and ornamentation reflect the characteristic lines of the period, with a clear Neoclassical inspiration (such as the upper corner finials), marquetry details, and an emphasis on symmetry and formal elegance.

The central decorative medallion is commonly known as a fan patera or sunburst marquetry. It is an oval (or circular) inlay in which the wooden segments are arranged radially, simulating the folds of an open fan. Although typical of Edwardian furniture, this is actually a Neoclassical-inspired design that revives the Sheraton style of the late 18th century.

The Edwardian era in the United Kingdom refers to the reign of Edward VII, from 1901 to 1910, son of Queen Victoria. However, the period extended until the end of the First World War in 1918. The new king, a keen traveler, introduced continental European tastes to the elite. Furniture from this period is characterized by an emphasis on elegance and restraint, in contrast to the luxury and opulence of French furniture. Edwardian furniture adopted a lighter aesthetic and incorporated Neoclassical and Georgian influences. See less
