Lancashire Bobbin Rocking Chair
A truly rare and increasingly difficult-to-find example of traditional Northern English craftsmanship, this original Lancashire bobbin rocking chair dates from the early 19th century and represents a fascinating piece of rural social history.
Hand crafted by skilled local craftsmen using traditional woodworking techniques passed down through generations, these distinctive country chairs were commonly found throughout Lancashire and Cheshire. Built for both practicality and longevity, each chair was individually made rather than mass-produced, resulting in subtle variations that give every surviving example its own unique character.
Constructed from ash and elder, timbers prized for their strength, flexibility, and availability within the local landscape, the chair features a beautifully hand-turned bobbin frame. The intricate bobbin work would have been painstakingly produced on a pole lathe, with each spindle carefully shaped by hand before being assembled using traditional joinery methods. The result is a chair that combines structural integrity with a remarkable decorative quality.
One of the most charming and distinctive features of this piece is the set of wool winders incorporated into the upper section of the chair. These four upright posts were designed to assist in winding skeins of wool into organised figure-of-eight patterns, reflecting the important role that domestic textile production played within Lancashire households during the period. This practical feature elevates the chair beyond simple furniture, making it a genuine artefact of England's rich textile heritage.
Over the centuries, the chair has developed a wonderful depth of character and patina, bearing the marks and wear associated with generations of use. The frame has been sympathetically cleaned and nourished with a generous application of quality wax to enhance and preserve the natural beauty of the timber while respecting its historic integrity.
To complement the warm tones of the wood, we have added a luxurious emerald green velvet seat pad, creating a striking contrast between rustic craftsmanship and contemporary comfort.
