Important art deco vase designed by charles catteau for the boch frères keramis factory in la louvière, belgium, circa 1928.
this remarkable creation perfectly illustrates the geometric style that made charles catteau famous during the golden age of belgian decorative arts. The vase features the celebrated d.1210 pattern, composed of a sophisticated interplay of black and yellow triangles punctuated with orange cabochons, set against a visually rich, crackled white background. The lower section is enlivened by large stylized blue-gray and black motifs, evoking modern architecture and the characteristic dynamism of art deco.
charles catteau (1880-1966), artistic director of the boch keramis design studio from 1907, remains one of the major figures in 20th-century european ceramics. His works are held in numerous public and private collections worldwide.
model d.1210 is documented in marc pairon's catalogue raisonné:
art deco ceramics – made in belgium, charles catteau catalogue raisonné, marc pairon, 2006, model no. 1328, page 635.
the vase bears the boch la louvière "made in belgium" stamp on its base, along with the decoration number d.1210 and the shape number 908.
condition
good overall condition.
there is an old hairline crack visible only inside the neck and not apparent when the vase is displayed. There is slight wear to the upper rim, consistent with the age of the piece.
the glazes, colors, and geometric decoration are particularly well preserved and retain all their vibrancy.
