Dating to 1958, this ingenious black lacquer cabinet is one of those pieces that completely surprised me. At first glance it appears to be a handsome Chinoiserie-inspired cabinet with oversized brass moon-gate pulls and clean architectural lines. Then, with a pull of the tabletop, it reveals itself as an exceptionally clever dining table or workstation—an elegant solution for anyone who appreciates beautiful design that works just as hard as it looks.
When fully extended, the table measures approximately 80.75 inches in overall length (table top and cabinet) and comfortably seats up to seven people—three along each side and one at the head—making it ideal for everything from family dinners to game nights and holiday gatherings.
One of my favorite details is the tabletop. Rather than a plain surface, it features a beautifully textured grasscloth-inspired pattern sealed beneath a durable finish. It has the warmth and character of woven natural fibers, yet it's completely smooth, durable, and easy to wipe clean - that's why it still looks great 70 years later!
Inside, the cabinet offers convenient storage for dinnerware, linens, office supplies, or entertaining essentials, allowing it to transition effortlessly between dining, working, and everyday living. Its bold black lacquer finish and brass hardware evoke the sophisticated East-meets-West aesthetic popularized by designers such as James Mont, giving the piece a timeless presence that feels equally at home in Hollywood Regency, Chinoiserie, or eclectic interiors.
Whether you're furnishing a city apartment, a vacation home, or simply love furniture that does more than one thing beautifully, this is a piece that's as practical as it is memorable.

The black lacquer finish presents beautifully overall, with expected light surface wear, including some finish loss to the pull-out tabletop apron from years of use. There is a small area of missing veneer on the upper back left corner. The brass-toned hardware displays age-appropriate patina. Structurally excellent, with a sturdy tabletop and a smooth-operating extension mechanism that slides out and stores as intended. less
