The IW3 rocking chair, designed by Illum Wikkelsø for the Niels Eilersen manufacturer, is one of the most distinctive examples of Danish design of the 1950s. This model was developed in the late 1950s and produced in Denmark for the following decade. Its form perfectly captures what Scandinavian design of the period was renowned for – a combination of functionality, comfort, and organic lines inspired by nature.
The presented piece is made of solid oak. The slender structure, gently curved runners, and distinctive, sculptural armrests lend the chair a lightness despite its solid construction. Wikkelsø designed this model to be as visually appealing as it is comfortable in everyday use. The high backrest and ergonomically contoured structural elements provide a level of comfort rarely found in most contemporary rocking chairs.
The chair has been professionally and carefully restored by removing old coatings, staining and finishing with varnish. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced carpenter with over 20 years of experience. Thanks to these treatments, the chair looks stunning and will serve its new owner for many years without fear of damage or wear from everyday use.
Stylistically, the IW3 model aligns with the Danish modernist and mid-century modern movement. Characteristic features of the design include flowing, biomorphic lines and a minimalist form, giving the armchair a light and timeless appearance even sixty years after its creation.
