A scarce trompe l’oeil covered tureen from Choisy-le-Roi, France, circa 1880-1889.
An unusual tureen formed as a woven herring-bone pattern basket filled with fresh eggs. The oval basket shows a tan colored majolica glaze, and has side handles formed as ribboned bows, glazed in burgundy and applied at either end.
The lid has a dozen off-white hen eggs nestled in a bed of straw.
A beautiful mold, rarely found.
This piece shows the markings of Hippolyte Boulenger, a director of the pottery starting in 1863. 12 inches L x 7.5 in. W x 6.5 in. H, including the lid.
In very good antique condition, the expected light stain to the interior of the base, as expected.
