This elegant suiban is made of either bronze with a bronze patina or brass with a bronze patina (the latter gets my vote).
The excellence of the design and the craftsmanship are in evidence. The elephant head handles add that special touch!
The kenzan (we call it a “flower frog) inside, affixed by a putty of some sort (easily extracted), shows this suiban has been employed for ikebana arrangements, the floral expression so endeared to the Japanese. This kenzan measures about 2 1/2 inches across.
No idea how old it is, possibly in the range of 80-100 years.
Dimensions: about 12 by 8 inches (not including the handles), about 3 1/2 inches high.
