On offer is a beautifully proportioned antique Japanese bronze Ikebana flower vase. Dating from the late Meiji to Taisho period (late 19th to early 20th century). The elongated, ultra-slim neck flaring into a teardrop bulbous base is known as a Tsuru Kubi (Crane-Neck) vase. This minimalist profile is highly prized in traditional Japanese Ikebana flower arranging because it elegantly frames a single, dramatic floral stem or branch.
Traditional Japanese metalwork of this style relies on specialized high-copper bronze alloys designed to produce unique patinas. This piece is made of cast bronze with a rich, mottled olive-green and deep brown patina. This specific finish is typical of Japanese studio metalwork, achieved by treating the heated copper alloy with traditional acid or tea mixtures to create an organic, variegated texture.
The underside of the base features an incised signature seal. The prominent bottom character is the Kanji 虹 (Niji), which translates directly to "Rainbow" in Japanese. Positioned just above the kanji is a stylized artist monogram or Kao, which resembles a combined arrow, bow, or script swirl. This specific combination denotes the studio name or the art-name (Go) assumed by the master metalsmith who cast the piece.
Minimalist, elegant Tsurukubi vases with artist signatures from this golden era of Japanese metalwork are highly sought after by collectors of Asian art.
