An exceptional and generously scaled French Sèvres-style porcelain bombe casket, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900. At 11 inches wide, this piece commands presence — far larger than the typical trinket box in this genre, and decorated with the full vocabulary of the French Rococo Revival at its finest.
The domed lid is painted with a sumptuous pastoral courting scene after François Boucher — the celebrated 18th-century painter to Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour — signed and dated in the manner of the period. Two elegantly dressed figures recline in a lush landscape with sheep and hound, rendered in the warm, sensuous palette that made Boucher’s work the defining image of aristocratic French taste.
The lid border and box body are dressed in rose Pompadour pink porcelain — the legendary ground color developed exclusively at the Sèvres manufactory in the 1750s and forever associated with French royal patronage. Elaborate raised gilding in rococo scrollwork, floral cartouches, and pearl-dot borders frames hand-painted floral reserves on each face of the box, with pink roses, blue forget-me-nots, and mixed bouquets rendered with delicate naturalism. hinge and clasp in the French ormolu tradition, now beautifully patinated to a warm antique bronze. The interior is finished in white porcelain with painted floral sprays to both the base and the underside of the lid — a refinement found only on quality pieces intended for the luxury dressing table.
A gold triangle decorator’s mark appears to the base. Condition is excellent — porcelain intact with no chips, cracks, or restoration; gilding vivid and largely unworn; mounts fully functional.
A rare find at this scale. Perfect for a dressing room, a chinoiserie interior, or as a statement piece atop a secretary or vanity.
