Nicholas Haydon operated an upscale boutique shop in Manhattan during the early to mid-20th century, specializing in mounting luxury imported items—such as Chinese porcelain, antique plates, and carved jade—with custom gilt-metal (ormolu) or brass fittings. The inkwell features a multi-tiered, octagonal porcelain body resting on a dark, matching octagonal metal base stand. The porcelain is finely painted with delicate floral sprays around the wide lower shoulder and finished with hand-applied gold leaf borders. The domed middle tier features a repeating vertical pattern of stylized burgundy/maroon panels alternating with gold-painted accents. The top is fitted with an ornate ormolu (gilt-bronze) collar and a hinged, dome-shaped lid displaying highly detailed relief filigree work. The lid is crowned with a porcelain, leaf-molded decorative finial with gold highlights. Lifting the hinged metal dome reveals a small reservoir or removable glass insert intended to hold liquid ink. I love the fine craftsmanship that went into this inkwell. Other sites list this as made in the USA, however, Nicolas Haydon imported items and this is reminiscent of Sevres pieces or other European makers. See less
