Rising to an impressive 79.2 inches high, the cabinet features a molded cornice above two stacked pairs of doors retaining their simple round wooden knobs and period character. The triangular form allows the cabinet to nest efficiently into a corner while creating a surprisingly commanding presence. Inside are fitted shelves designed for the display of china, glassware, pottery, and collections. What distinguishes this example from many country cupboards of the period are the beautifully fielded interior door panels. While most cupboards received plain interior surfaces, these doors were carefully finished on the inside, suggesting the maker intended the cabinet to be appreciated both open and closed.
The warm finish highlights the natural figure of the wood, while the paneled construction, tapered front supports, and substantial molded cornice reflect the thoughtful craftsmanship associated with mid-19th-century American cabinetmaking. The back is constructed of wide vertical boards displaying the oxidation, square nails, and wear expected from a cabinet of genuine age.
Equally at home in a country house, traditional interior, collected New England-inspired setting, or modern home seeking authentic American character, this cupboard offers both practical storage and architectural presence.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
I grew up in an early American home in New England, and the moment I saw this cupboard I felt as though I were greeting an old friend. The silhouette, the warm wood, the way it settles naturally into a corner—everything about it feels familiar. Corner cupboards like this were part of everyday life in many early American homes, quietly holding dishes, glassware, and family treasures for generations.
What surprised me, however, was opening the doors. Most country cupboards were built with little concern for what the inside of the doors looked like. Here, the maker took the time to create beautifully paneled and fielded interiors. It is an extra detail that was unnecessary from a purely practical standpoint but transforms the experience of the cabinet when opened. I find myself imagining shelves filled with creamware, transferware, stoneware, or collections gathered over decades. With the doors open, those paneled interiors become part of the display, framing whatever is placed inside. It suggests a cabinet intended not merely for storage but for showing cherished possessions.
